Pitztal – Beautiful & Fierce

From Imst to Roppen in the Tyrolean Oberinntal valley the river Inn forges its way through a deep gorge and from there, the beautiful Pitztal valley stretches towards the south. Enjoy a holiday at the foot of the highest mountains in North Tyrol. The valley is approximately 40 kilometres long and is the home of the Wildspitze mountain, which is 3,768 metres above sea-level and the highest mountain in the North Tyrolean region. The charming villages of this valley offer a choice of holiday destinations for a memorable holiday spent in Tyrolean nature. Feel right at home in Arzl im Pitztal, Wenns, Jerzens and St. Leonhard im Pitztal. The adventure starts when entering the valley through the Pitzenklamm gorge in Arzl, and then the valley opens at the quaint village Wenns.

This beautiful village Wenns is also home to the oldest farmhouse in all of Tyrol, which is well worth a visit. The Pitzenklamm gorge offers a unique experience and is also suited for all thrill seekers, because there is a bungee jump off a suspension bridge there. At the foot of the Hochzeiger mountain the valley splits into the Pillerhöhe, which stretches towards the Kaunertal, and the Innerpitztal valley, which is a high-alpine experience. If you travel to Jerzenz, you can continue on to St. Leonhard, which is situated directly at the Pitztal glacier. To the west, you will find the Nature Park Kaunergrat, which offers a spectacular nature experience as well. To the east, the Geigenkamm mountain range forms the alpine border to the neighbouring Ötztal valley. Another spectacular formation to the north, the Northern Alps, ensures the unique climate in this region which is known to be one of the driest regions of all of Tyrol.

The holiday region Pitztal is suited wonderfully for all hikers, winter-sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers. One of the highlights surely is the Pitztal glacier at the end of the valley as it offers unbound skiing or snowboarding fun at 3,440 metres above sea-level at the Pitztaler Glacier & Rifflsee ski resort offering a snow-guarantee from autumn until May. Explore the 41 kilometres of perfectly groomed slopes and marvel at the spectacular views from high above. The ski resort Hochzeiger at the start of the valley offers 40 kilometres of slopes at all levels of difficulty to explore. For all cross-country skiers, the Pitztal valley ensures a fantastic range of tracks in the valley, and also all the way up at 2,740 metres above sea-level ensuring fantastic snow conditions. The high-alpine cross-country ski track at Rifflsee (2,280 metres) and the track at the glacier are renowned as some of the best tracks, especially in regards to snow guarantee, in all of Austria.

During summer this region is ideal for all hikers. Enjoy a lovely hiking tour in this spectacular setting. The marked trails range from gentle hikes suited for families to alpine pastures, to challenging summit hikes for experienced mountaineers. A highly-recommended family-friendly hike can be enjoyed at the Söllberg waterfall near St. Leonhard, as well as the Stuiben waterfall near Jerzenz, which is 150 metres high and one of the highest waterfalls in all of Tyrol. For all enthusiastic sportsmen and sportswomen, as well as interested spectators, the ultra-marathon Pitztal-Gletscher Trail-Maniak is held in July. The ultra-marathon is 95 kilometres long, includes a staggering 6,500 metres in altitude, and is known to be one of the hardest ultra-marathons in all of Europe.
